#5 Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Made for less than $300,000, Tobe Hooper’s grueling exploitation slasher introduced horror fans to levels of raw, visceral gore and psychological brutality never seen before. It adds a gritty sheen of documentary-style realism combined with its re-invention of power tools as instruments of mutilation and torture. The utter shock viewers experienced ushered in a new era of uncompromising horror. And despite a lack of significant onscreen violence, it feels genuinely traumatic and transgressive. The film also spawned Leatherface and family – some of horror’s most iconic killers.

#4 Night of the Living Dead (1968)

It’s hard to overstate how revolutionary George A. Romero’s zombie opus was for indie cinema and the horror genre overall. Made on a $114,000 budget, it brought gory flesh-eating "ghouls" into the mainstream for the first time and completely discarded rules about heroes surviving and restoring social norms at the end. Not only did it spawn the modern zombie genre, it encouraged political and social commentary in horror while proving indie films could make significant impact. Its use of television and immediacy re-created mass panic and trauma on screen for many.

#3 The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Perhaps no indie horror film has had larger impact than Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s found footage phenomenon which was an absolute viral and cultural sensation. Marketed as actual raw documentary footage, it terrified audiences, blurred reality and fiction, and popularized the internet as a marketing tool for film. As one of the most profitable movies ever made, it not only proved found footage could be mainstream, it spawned infinite copycats hoping to replicate its success. Its realistic DIY aesthetic made horrors like ghost hunting shows, escape rooms and interactive theater viable.

#2 Evil Dead II (1987)

Sam Raimi’s legendary sequel brought his gonzo directorial style and over-the-top comedic gore visuals into a masterful combination that created a cult classic. Made independently for just $3.6 million, its inventive camerawork, homemade special effects, rapid-fire editing style and complete lack of restraint made it an endlessly creative 80s gorefest. It launched the popular franchise and career of Bruce Campbell. But more importantly, it opened the floodgates for horror-comedy as a legitimate and successful genre moving forward. Into the 90s and beyond, its influence persisted through mainstream hits like Scream.

#1 Halloween (1978)

The true pioneer that enabled the rise of the modern indie scene and slasher genre. John Carpenter’s suburban nightmare was crafted for just $320,000 and relied on expert filmmaking rather than effects or gore to become the most successful independent movie ever at the time. It also gave birth to Michael Myers and the unstoppable killer archetype. Halloween made indie filmmakers realize mainstream success was possible outside the studio system. And it set the mold for 80s slashers by proving a simple, efficient concept could resonate forever. The story, characters, and style provides the backbone of horror even today.

There you have it - the seminal indie films that altered and progress horror though revolutionary ideas, sheer creativity and trailblazing marketing that allows the genre to continuously reinvent itself. What other influential indie horror movies belong on this list? Let us know!
